Please remember to pick up your picture order forms at the front desk if you have not already done so. For all the upcomming events and practices Please go to the Events Calender at the top of the Web Page Equipment Tips - Sharpening A number of the kids skates are showing signs of having dull skate blades. I realize many of the parents don't know when it's time to get the skates sharpened so I thought I would give you some helpful tips:
First of all, the reason we need sharp skates is so that the edges of our blades bite (or grip) into the ice and allow us to make sharp turns at speed. If the skates are dull, you will see the skater
"Losing their edge" and falling down on the turn. A dull skate will actually slide out from under the skater, which makes it very difficult to skate fast. You can check sharpness by running your fingers ACROSS the blade to see if they feel sharp. I recommend not running your fingers along the blade, remember....we call them blades for a reason! Also, check the entire blade, sometimes a small patch of blade that is dull will be enough to have the skater lose balance. Be sure your skater is protecting their blades in their hockey bag.Use some type of cloth blade cover to protect the edges (rubber guards are to protect the blades while walking on hard surfaces, don't store you skates with rubber guards or they will rust). Things in your hockey bag will dull the blades if they're not protected. Make sure you wipe the blades dry before storing in the bag, you want to keep them as rust free as possible. Last but not least, ONLY WALK ON THE RUBBER SURFACE, DO NOT WALK ON CONCRETE OR METAL! This will scuff the blade and in most cases will require an immediate sharpening to repair the edges.
I'm often asked "How often should I sharpen my skates"? There is no set time frame....it depends on the blades, the skater, the ice conditions, how you protect your blades etc .....get them sharpened when they feel dull to the skater or when they feel dull upon inspection. If you're unsure if your skater needs a sharpening feel free to ask the coaches to check your blades. Keep those skates sharp and stay warm!
See you at the rink, Coach Chris
